Batman soars over 3.0 University Place Site for one incredible SIGHT for Flyby Friday

What would Friday be without a visit from Batman, our trusty drone and eyes in the sky? Today’s Flyby Friday features the beloved 3.0 University Place on Market Street in University City. This remarkable LEED & WELL Platinum Certified Lab Building is finishing up nicely to add to the picturesque landscape of the Platinum Corridor. Batman caught quite the “view” of the innovative VIEW Smart Glass (no blinds, heat, or glare) surrounding the exterior of the building. 3.0 University Place wouldn’t be possible without MBC’s strategic alliance with Dale Corp. Towering Night of Fun at the ACE Mentor Program of Philadelphia's Giant Jenga Tournament!

What do you get when a bunch of talented AEC people gather in a room to play Giant Jenga for a good cause? A towering night of fun and LEAN competition that really levels the playing field. McDonald Building Company was well represented with two teams last week at the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum in Philadelphia. Batman flies over to 400 West Elm site in Conshohocken as a head start on spring updates!

All this talk about the weekend makes us think it’s about time for a Flyby Friday! Batman the Drone flew on over to Conshohocken to visit our 400 West Elm jobsite. Things may look a little different since you last saw the impressive 13-story luxury apartment complex – you’ll notice all the exterior wall panels are COMPLETE! Interior drywall finishes on the lower floors have officially started on the 348 units, making this beautiful build one step closer to completion this fall. Three stormwater basins in the back are complete, and we’re prepping for paving. SQP at 400 W. Elm in Conshohocken - Thank you STI for an invaluable training session!

What does SQP mean to MBC? Specified Technologies, Inc. - STI Firestop (STI) visited our 400 W. Elm jobsite in Conshohocken to provide invaluable firestopping training and certification. Firestop systems are highly dependent on proper design and installation for success in the event of an actual fire. The importance of these sorts of trainings for all the trades cannot be understated to ensure that firestopping systems are installed correctly in the field. Thank you to our subs who attended from Wolf Fire Protection, PDM, EMMS Electric and most importantly, THANK YOU, Jared Stewart and STI for hosting. Safety, Quality, and Production in practice at the jobsite – that’s a sight we LOVE to see!

MBC is starting the New Year off right with a great New View down in Alexandria, Virginia. The team is making progress on this 193,000 square-foot, 178 room hotel with interior & exterior renovations, new lobby, café, terrace and amenities. The smartly renovated Old Towne Hotel aka Alexandria will be the finest extended stay boutique hotel in the region. The lobby now boasts new curtain wall openings and fresh lounge tile while the cinema room is moving along with the Kvadrat acoustic panels installed. Novum Structures mobilized this week for the exterior glass canopy that will be a modern welcoming feature for guests as they arrive for check-in. MBC enjoys Ugly Sweater Happy Hour and gives well wishes to one of our superintendents, Adam Blitchford, in his retirement!

‘Tis the season to be the jolly and MBC came out in full force with our best and ugliest sweaters this year for one festive happy hour. But these smiles are really just hiding our resting grinch faces over the bittersweet news of one of our superintendents, Adam Blitchford’s retirement. Adam was with MBC for over seven years and worked on a variety of projects during his time at MBC near and far. Most recently, he was down at 1315 Walnut Street overseeing their HVAC Systems Replacement. Other notable projects Adam led included Salvation Army's Kroc Center in Camden, Project HOME’s Honickman Learning Center in Phila, Ancillae Assumpta Academy's renovation in Wyncote, and Project HOME’s Rowan Judson Diamond in Phila – just to name a few. Adam will leave an everlasting legacy around here and we will miss his quick wit and reliable work ethic at our job sites. Thank you Adam for seven memorable years of service and for all you did to make the impossible…well, possible.

MBC remembers Frank McDonald fondly (1929-2022)

We are sad to report the passing of Francis J. McDonald, father and mentor to Tom & Paul, and grandfather to several other MBC team members - Andrew, Danny, & Kevin Rose. Frank was 93. An electrical engineer by education and builder at heart, Frank spent the first part of his career working for large electrical contractors, several construction/development companies, and ultimately as a construction manager for LF Driscoll. He was the inspiration behind Tom & Paul’s entrée into the construction industry and a passionate leader of large-scale construction projects in the Philadelphia region before relocating to upstate NY. He co-founded a successful real estate firm with his wife Willie Bea and remained active in the business until last year. Frank had a large part in the founding of MBC. His behind-the-scenes advice helped us grow and prosper, and it will be missed. As late as this past fall, he loved talking “shop”, reminiscing on past projects, and more importantly talking about the many friends and co-workers he made over the years. His memory was remarkable and if you crossed paths with him, he likely remembered you. We are thankful for his impact, will miss him dearly, and we know he is looking down on the MBC team with pride.
